WELCOME TO BUSINESS RECYCLING SERVICE OF THE TRIAD
BRS is a North Carolina company founded for the purpose of helping other North Carolina companies comply with our new state law that forbids plastic bottles from being sent to our various landfill facilities. Plastic has a particularly long decomposition period and landfill space is becoming more precious, and expensive, with each passing year. Recycling can be a simple process but as the old saying goes, "somebody's got to do it".
Although there are profitable markets for recyclable plastic material, plastic presents a number of collection and transportation challenges that don't exist for other recyclable materials, such as aluminum. For example, plastic can't be compressed into a dense package that will maintain its shape without special, expensive baling equipment and its per pound price make collecting it for redemption extremely unprofitable.
BRS has a collection bin and an efficient computer generated pick-up routine that allows us to gather plastic material in a simple, affordable manner. Collecting 50 bundles makes economic "cents" when one-at-a-time doesn't. And, we make sure that the aluminum packages get recycled as well.

What's the big deal?
On October 1, 2009, House Bill 1465 went into effect. The law requires the recycling of all plastic bottles and containers with a recycle symbol of #1 - #7 on the bottom. The law has mainly focused on plastic bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These bottles are identified by their recycle symbol with the numeral 1 and are typically used for water and soft drinks. Last year North Carolina sent 70,000 tons of plastic bottles to landfills in our state. That's about 2.4 billion plastic bottles. Currently, we are only recycling less than 20% of the bottles we use.
It's estimated that PET bottles will take 100 years (or longer!) to decompose in a landfill. It's just plain crazy to be burying this type of material in a big hole in the ground when there is an easy, inexpensive alternative. And, there is a profitable market for recyclable PET plastic bottles, as well as aluminum cans. In fact, recycling these materials is much less expensive and uses less energy than producing the original container. And plastic is a petroleum based product that requires importing foreign oil supplies to produce - this has got to stop!!
For example, recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours! And recycling just one out of every ten newspapers produced in this country would save nearly 25,000 trees per year. And a company named Clear Path Recycling is currently constructing a $50 million dollar plant in Fayetteville to recycle all of the PET plastic bottles we can collect
Despite extensive and coordinated efforts toward promoting recycling, average per person poundage of trash sent to our landfills has actually increased over the past 10 years.
North Carolina has set an aggressive goal of collecting and processing 2,000,000 tons of recyclables by 2012, less than three short years from now.
Clearly, public awareness and personal responsibility will be keys to meeting that goal and protecting our valuable North Carolina environment going forward.
BRS believes that good old fashioned competition can also be part of the solution. Last year in the state of North Carolina, Orange County lead the state in recycling with an average of 29 pounds per person and Pamlico County was a distant second with an average of 15 pounds. Incredibly, the state wide county average was just 3 pounds of recycled material per person. Look for the BRSRecycling Scoreboard next January.

Did you know?
North Carolinians recycle 68 pounds of materials a second! That's impressive! But we throw away 679 pounds of trash a second. That's ten times what we recycle.
With the amount of trash North Carolinians throw away, we could fill enough Dumpsters to line the length of Interstate 40 from one end of North Carolina to the other more than six times a year. That's 2,555 miles of Dumpsters! (Source: www.re3.org )
Scott Mouw, state recycling coordinator, DPPEA, recently stated that, "every 3.9 seconds North Carolinians throw away enough plastic bottles to reach the height of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. With the plastic bottle disposal ban now in place, we need to educate and remind people to recycle as much as possible to help us create jobs and grow our economy."
